Hello, I’m Juan Santiago and welcome to my Graphics Bio page. I started my graphics/printing career in New York City in 1975 working in a   photoengraving letterpress trade shop. Here I had the opportunity to learn about deep etch plating and lithographic film. I also learned how to operate a Brown process camera which provided me technical skills in shooting line work and halftones. A year later I was trained to operate a “Step and Repeat” machine which captured images on film in any numerical configuration used mostly for labels.

During the Eighties, Offset Printing was thriving and commercial offset plate trade shops were everywhere. My skills were centered around plate making and camera work and soon I was producing four color separation films which led to another skill called “Offset Stripping”.

Stripping refers to the assembly of separated negative or positive films for each color in exact register attached to a stable based clear material for the purposes of exposing these precisely registered images onto metal plates.  These plates are then mounted on offset presses of 2 to 8 colors for sheet fed and web printing. Stripping was considered a fine craft because you had to “Prep” a page that had complicated artwork with gradations represented with tints and photos to produce efficient one piece films for plate making.

When the 90’s came along so did computer technology, much to the dismay of the traditional, conventional printing craftsman.

We had machines that can do the job of a seasoned skilled craftsman in half the time with even more precision. Shortly thereafter Desktop Publishing arrived and now it became a whole different industry in regards to print production and Design. I was fortunate and determined to hang on to this new wave of technology by forcing myself to take technical courses and look for opportunities to learn all I can to stay afloat in those challenging times. Below is just a glimpse of my experience. If you’d like more information, please email me.
